We study the hydrodynamics of the high-energy phase of Little String Theory. The poles of the retarded two-point function of the stress energy tensor contain information about the speed of sound and the kinetic coefficients, such as shear and bulk viscosity. We compute this two-point function in the dual string theory and analytically continue it to Lorentzian signature. We perform an independent check of our results by the Lorentzian supergravity calculation in the background of non-extremal...

We report on the growth and characterization of ferromagnetic Gd-doped EuO thin films. We prepared samples with Gd concentrations up to 11% by means of molecular beam epitaxy under distillation conditions, which allows a very precise control of the doping concentration and oxygen stoichiometry. Using soft x-ray magnetic circular dichroism at the Eu and Gd M4,5 edges, we found that the Curie temperature ranged from 69 K for pure stoichiometric EuO to about 170 K for the film with the optimal Gd...

The interplay between dust and molecules is of fundamental importance in early galaxy evolution. First we present the prediction for the dust emission from forming galaxies. Then we discuss the observational strategy for molecules in early galaxies by infrared absorption lines of a bright continuum source behind the clouds. By combining these two approaches, we will be able to have a coherent picture of the very early stage of galaxy evolution.

The steady-state structure of self-gravitating, magnetized accretion disks is studied using a set of self-similar solutions which are appropriate in the outer regions. The disk is assumed to be isothermal and the magnetic field outside of the disk is treated in a phenomenological way. However, the internal field is determined self-consistently. The behaviour of the solutions are investigated by changing the input parameters of the model, i.e. mass accretion rate, coefficients of viscosity and...

A parent action is introduced to formulate (S-) dual of non-anticommutative N=1\2 supersymmetric U(1) gauge theory. Partition function for parent action in phase space is utilized to establish the equivalence of partition functions of the theories which this parent action produces. Thus, duality invariance of non-anticommutative N=1\2 supersymmetric U(1) gauge theory follows. The results which we obtained are valid at tree level or equivalently at the first order in the nonanticommutativity...

This study of U(1) gauge field theory on the kappa-deformed Minkowski spacetime extends previous work on gauge field theories on this type of noncommutative spacetime. We discuss in detail the properties of the Seiberg-Witten map and the resulting effective action for U(1) gauge theory with fermionic matter expanded in ordinary fields. We construct the conserved gauge current, fix part of the ambiguities in the Seiberg-Witten map and obtain an effective U(1) action invariant under the action of...

We study analytically and numerically a model describing front propagation of a KPP reaction in a fluid flow. The model consists of coupled one-dimensional reaction-diffusion equations with different drift coefficients. The main rigorous results give lower bounds for the speed of propagation that are linear in the drift coefficient, which agrees very well with the numerical observations. In addition, we find the optimal constant in a functional inequality of independent interest used in the...

We investigate the suppression of $\pi^0$-spectrum in a wide range of $p_\perp$ up 60 GeV/c which is caused by the energy loss of the gluon and quark jets in quark-gluon plasma. The physical characteristics of initial and mixed phases were found in the effective quasiparticle model by analogy with previous work \cite{5}. The PHENIX data up 10 GeV/c within the limits of precision are described by quasiparticle model with decrease of the thermal gluon mass and effective coupling in the region of...

If new physics (NP) is present in B -> pi pi decays, it can affect the isospin I=2 or I=0 channels. In this paper, we discuss various methods for detecting and measuring this NP. The techniques have increasing amounts of theoretical hadronic input. If NP is eventually detected in B -> pi pi -- there is no evidence for it at present -- one will be able to distinguish I=2 and I=0, and measure its parameters, using these methods.

We review two general criteria for deciding whether a pure bipartite quantum state describing a system of two identical particles is entangled or not. The first one considers the possibility of attributing a complete set of objective properties to each particle belonging to the composed system, while the second is based both on the consideration of the Slater-Schmidt number of the fermionic and bosonic analog of the Schmidt decomposition and on the evaluation of the von Neumann entropy of the...

The aim of this paper is to present the didactic possibilities of phenomenology as moral philosophy. It deals with the possible application of phenomenology into education, with the way it makes the concept of reflection change, and how in its very essence, this encourages a moral relationship with the world, thus being fairly suitable for the ethics teaching. The present analysis also points towards the applicability of the phenomenological method in ethics lessons, especially in Lithuanian...

We fit the ultra high energy cosmic ray spectra above 10$^{19}$ eV with different injection spectra at cosmic ray sources that are uniformly and homogeneously distributed in the Universe. We conclude that the current UHE spectra are consistent with power laws of index $\alpha$ between 2.4 and 2.7. There is a slow dependence of these indices on the cosmological evolution of the cosmic ray sources, which in this model determines the end of the galactic cosmic rays spectrum.

A self-consistent large $N_c$ approach is developed for the collective quantization of SU(3) flavor hedgehog solitons, such as the Skyrmion. The key to this analysis is the determination of all of the zero modes associated with small fluctuations around the hedgehog. These are used in the conventional way to construct collective coordinates. This approach differs from previous work in that it does not implicitly assume that each static zero mode is associated with a dynamical zero mode. It is...

It is presented a thorough analysis of scalar perturbations in the background of Gauss-Bonnet, Gauss-Bonnet-de Sitter and Gauss-Bonnet-anti-de Sitter black hole spacetimes. The perturbations are considered both in frequency and time domain. The dependence of the scalar field evolution on the values of the cosmological constant $\Lambda$ and the Gauss-Bonnet coupling $\alpha$ is investigated. For Gauss-Bonnet and Gauss-Bonnet-de Sitter black holes, at asymptotically late times either power-law...

We consider a type of Quantum Electro-Mechanical System, known as the shuttle system, first proposed by Gorelik et al., [Phys. Rev. Lett., 80, 4526, (1998)]. We use a quantum master equation treatment and compare the semi-classical solution to a full quantum simulation to reveal the dynamics, followed by a discussion of the current noise of the system. The transition between tunnelling and shuttling regime can be measured directly in the spectrum of the noise.

Massless scalar and vector fields are coupled to Lyra geometry by means of Duffin-Kemmer-Petiau (DKP) theory. Using Schwinger Variational Principle, equations of motion, conservation laws and gauge symmetry are implemented. We find that the scalar field couples to the anholonomic part of the torsion tensor, and the gauge symmetry of the electromagnetic field is not breaking by the coupling with torsion.

We give a complete combinatorial description of the bifurcation structure in the space of exponential maps $z\mapsto\exp(z)+\kappa$. This combinatorial structure is the basis for a number of important results about exponential parameter space. These include the fact that every hyperbolic component has connected boundary, a classification of escaping parameters, and the fact that all dynamic and parameter rays at periodic addresses land.

A string basis is constructed for each subalgebra of invariants of the function algebra on the quantum special linear group. By analyzing the string basis for a particular subalgebra of invariants, we obtain a ``canonical basis'' for every finite dimensional irreducible $U_q({\mathfrak{sl}}(n))$-module. It is also shown that the algebra of functions on any quantum homogeneous space is generated by quantum minors.

We review recent advances in the spectral theory of Schr\"odinger operators with decaying potentials. The area has seen spectacular progress in the past few years, stimulated by several conjectures stated by Barry Simon starting at the 1994 International Congress on Mathematical Physics in Paris. The one-dimensional picture is now fairly complete, and provides many striking spectral examples. The multidimensional picture is still far from clear and may require deep original ideas for...

We consider the untyped lambda calculus with constructors and recursively defined constants. We construct a domain-theoretic model such that any term not denoting bottom is strongly normalising provided all its `stratified approximations' are. From this we derive a general normalisation theorem for applied typed lambda-calculi: If all constants have a total value, then all typeable terms are strongly normalising. We apply this result to extensions of G\"odel's system T and system F...

We present experimental results and theoretical analysis of the diffuse reflection of a Bose-Einstein condensate from a rough mirror. The mirror is produced by a blue-detuned evanescent wave supported by a dielectric substrate. The results are carefully analysed via a comparison with a numerical simulation. The scattering is clearly anisotropic, more pronounced in the direction of the evanescent wave surface propagation, as predicted theoretically.
